OPC Poisoning
Created by
Overview
Description
Organophosphorus compound (OPC) poisoning results from ingestion, inhalation, or dermal absorption of pesticides, leading to acetylcholinesterase inhibition and cholinergic crisis. Symptoms include salivation, lacrimation, urination, diarrhea, gastrointestinal upset, muscle weakness, and respiratory distress (SLUDGE syndrome). Management in the ICU requires airway protection, decontamination, and rapid administration of atropine to counter muscarinic effects, plus pralidoxime to reactivate cholinesterase. Seizure control, ventilatory support, and monitoring for intermediate syndrome are crucial. Early recognition and aggressive supportive therapy significantly improve patient outcomes.
