Description
Echocardiography plays a vital role in the assessment of mitral valve and has become the primary imaging modality. Profound anatomical and pathophysiological knowledge of the mitral valve (MV) and adjacent cardiac structures are essential for selecting the most appropriate anesthetic and surgical techniques. The mitral valve apparatus consists of the mitral annulus (with its atrial and ventricular attachments), mitral leaflets, chordae, papillary muscles and the ventricular/papillary muscle interactions. The normal mitral valve apparatus is a dynamic three-dimensional system that allows brisk left ventricular (LV) blood-inflow during diastole and ensures unidirectional heart pump function by sealing the left atrium from the LV during systole. Proper valve function is dependent on the integrity and harmonious interplay of these components.
