Overview

Description

Six  decades after its introduction, the Glenn shunt remains an integral step for patients undergoing single ventricle palliation. The Glenn operation involving anastomosis of the superior vena cava to the pulmonary artery. The Glenn shunt continues to provide an excellent staged palliation in single-ventricle patients and a bridge to two-ventricle repair half a century from its inception. Most patients required subsequent surgical interventions. The advantages of BDG shunt are achieved by partially separating the pulmonary and systemic venous circuits, and include reduced ventricular preload and long-term preservation of myocardium. The benefits of additional pulsatile pulmonary blood flow include the potential growth of pulmonary arteries, possible improvement in arterial oxygen saturation, and possible prevention of development of pulmonary arteriovenous malformations. This presentation deals with various aspect of Glenn shunt.
