Weaning from mechanical ventilation

Overview
Description
Weaning from mechanical ventilation is the gradual process of reducing ventilatory support as a patient’s respiratory function improves. It involves assessing readiness based on stable hemodynamics, adequate oxygenation, resolution of the underlying condition, and intact respiratory drive. Spontaneous breathing trials (SBTs) help evaluate the patient’s ability to breathe independently. Successful weaning reduces the risk of ventilator-associated complications. Monitoring includes respiratory rate, tidal volume, oxygen saturation, and signs of distress. If tolerated, extubation follows. A multidisciplinary approach ensures safe and effective weaning.
