Description
Atrial septal defect is most common congenital heart disease. It is a pathological communication between two atria of the heart. There are different types of ASD’s which are classified based on ASD location relative to fossa ovalis and developmental anatomy. ASD are associated with other congenital anomalies in the heart and few syndromes. Small ASD’s are well tolerated but large ASD’s with Qp/Qs >2 results in structural changes in pulmonary vascular bed leading to pulmonary hypertension and congestive heart failure if left untreated. They are surgically repaired with pericardial patch or by interventional procedures like device closure.This presentation also includes animation and video of both surgical and device closure.
