Structure & Functions of Mammalian Cell

Overview
Description
The mammalian cell is the basic structural and functional unit of the body. It consists of a plasma membrane, cytoplasm, and nucleus. The plasma membrane controls substance exchange. The cytoplasm contains organelles: mitochondria (energy production), endoplasmic reticulum (protein/lipid synthesis), Golgi apparatus (protein packaging), lysosomes (digestion), and ribosomes (protein synthesis). The nucleus holds DNA and regulates gene expression. Cells perform essential functions such as growth, repair, metabolism, and communication. Specialized cells form tissues and organs, supporting complex bodily functions and homeostasis.
