Echocardiogram in Aortic Stenosis

Overview
Description
Echocardiography is the gold standard for diagnosing and assessing aortic stenosis (AS). It evaluates valve anatomy, leaflet mobility, calcification, and measures pressure gradients across the aortic valve. Doppler imaging quantifies peak velocity and mean gradient, while continuity equation calculates aortic valve area (AVA). Left ventricular size, function, and hypertrophy are also assessed. Severity is classified as mild, moderate, or severe. Stress echocardiography is used in asymptomatic or low-flow states. Echocardiography guides timing of intervention, especially aortic valve replacement in severe AS.
