Gastrointestinal Hormones

Overview
Description
Gastrointestinal hormones are chemical messengers that regulate digestion, secretion, and motility. Key hormones include gastrin (stimulates gastric acid secretion), secretin (stimulates bicarbonate from the pancreas), and cholecystokinin (CCK) (stimulates bile release and pancreatic enzymes). Gastric inhibitory peptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) slow gastric emptying and enhance insulin secretion. Motilin regulates migrating motor complexes. These hormones are secreted by enteroendocrine cells in response to food and help coordinate digestive processes efficiently across different parts of the gut.
