Overview

Description

Calcium Homeostasis is the regulation of calcium levels in the blood and tissues to support vital functions like muscle contraction, nerve transmission, and bone health. It is maintained by the coordinated actions of the parathyroid hormone (PTH), vitamin D (calcitriol), and calcitonin. PTH increases blood calcium by stimulating bone resorption, renal reabsorption, and activating vitamin D. Calcitriol enhances intestinal calcium absorption, while calcitonin lowers calcium by inhibiting bone resorption. Disruption can lead to hypocalcemia or hypercalcemia and associated disorders.
