Overview

Description

Spinal anaesthesia is one of the most popular and widely used anaesthetic procedures. It is a simple, cost effective and efficient technique that provides complete sensory and motor block, as well as postoperative analgesia with a high success rate. The ease and long history of spinal anesthesia may give the impression that it is a simple technique with little sophistication. Normal physiologic manifestations of neuraxial blockade such as hypotension are not necessarily complications but normal physiological effects of neuraxial blockade. However, much has been learned recently regarding the anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and applications of spinal anesthesia. This presentation focuses on clinically relevant physiology for this  popular technique.
