Overview
Description
Percutaneous dilational tracheostomy (PDT), also referred to as bedside tracheostomy, is the placement of a tracheostomy tube without direct surgical visualization of the trachea. Submental intubation (SI) has been described as an alternative to nasoendotracheal intubation when oral endotracheal intubation is contraindicated. Submental intubation is not intended to replace tracheostomy, but in selected cases of facial trauma or orthognathic surgery it may be the better option. Retromolar intubation is a non-invasive technique and avoids both submento-tracheal intubation and tracheostomy in the majority of patients. This video encloses the difference between the surgical tracheostomy and percutaneous dilational tracheostomy, method of inserting PDT, benefits of PDT, submental and retromolar intubation.
