Description
Ascaris lumbricoides, commonly known as the roundworm, is a large intestinal nematode that causes ascariasis, primarily in tropical and subtropical regions. Infection occurs through ingestion of embryonated eggs from contaminated food or water. Larvae hatch in the intestine, migrate via the bloodstream to the lungs, ascend the respiratory tract, and are swallowed back into the gut. Adults live in the small intestine. Symptoms range from asymptomatic to abdominal pain, malnutrition, or respiratory issues. Diagnosis is via stool microscopy. Treatment includes albendazole or mebendazole.
