Posture and hypotension

Overview
Description
Posture and hypotension are closely linked, especially in orthostatic hypotension, where a drop in blood pressure occurs upon standing. This results from impaired autonomic response, reduced venous return, or hypovolemia, leading to decreased cerebral perfusion and symptoms like dizziness or fainting. Normally, baroreceptors trigger vasoconstriction and increased heart rate to maintain pressure. Conditions like dehydration, autonomic dysfunction, medications, and aging can impair this response. Management includes hydration, compression stockings, slow positional changes, and addressing underlying causes to prevent complications.
