Overview
Description
The pericardium is a thin fibroelastic sac composed of two layers that separate the heart from the surrounding mediastinal structures. If there is inflammation of any of the layers of pericardium then it is said to be pericardial disease or pericarditis. If there is extra fluid in space between pericardial layers, is called pericardial effusion. The treatment for pericarditis is only medications depending upon the cause, if its constrictive pericarditis surgery is needed or if there is fluid build-up in pericardium it must be drained. Here, this video explains the pericardial anatomy, layers of pericardium, functions, etiology, common causes, pathogenesis and clinical features of pericarditis. A note added on pericardial effusion briefly.
