Echocardiographic assessment of diastolic function

Overview
Description
Diastolic heart failure is an underestimated pathology with a high risk of acute decompensation during the perioperative period.Anesthesiologists involved in the perioperative care of this patients routinely manage appropriately, perhaps without realizing the stages of diastolic dysfunction. The appreciation of the severity stage of diastolic dysfunction can possibly be used to modify/refine clinical care. The spectrum of diastolic disease extends from the asymptomatic phase to fulminant cardiac failure. A clearer understanding of the underlying pathophysiology and clinical implications of HF with a preserved ejection fraction is fundamental to directing further research and to evaluate interventions. Advances in echocardiography technology have been instrumental in our understanding of ventricular function. This presentation highlights about physiology of diastole, criteria for diastolic dysfunction, etiology diagnosis and management and finally perioperative management.
