Overview

Description

Transesophageal echocardiography provides superior aortic imaging due to the esophagus's proximity to the aorta. TEE excellently visualizes the ascending aorta, aortic arch, and proximal descending aorta with high resolution. Key applications include diagnosing aortic dissection (identifying intimal flaps, true/false lumens), detecting aortic atheroma and mobile plaques, assessing aortic aneurysms, and evaluating penetrating aortic ulcers. TEE guides endovascular procedures and monitors complications. Limitations include potential blind spots in the distal ascending aorta due to tracheal shadowing. Color Doppler detects flow patterns and helps differentiate dissection types. TEE is the preferred emergency imaging modality for suspected acute aortic syndromes, providing rapid, accurate diagnosis for time-critical interventions.
