Dexmedetomidine

Description

Dexmedetomidine has evolved as a panacea for various applications which  include premedication, as part of multimodal anesthetic regimen, regional anesthesia, sedation, monitored anesthesia care, procedural sedation, prevention / treatment of emergence delirium, alcohol withdrawal & shivering, and the list continues to grow. Also dexmedetomidine have found newer applications in  neuroprotection, cardioprotection, and renoprotection, especially in children. Dexmedetomidine has become of the frequently used drugs in anaesthetic armamentarium, along with routine anaesthetic drugs, due to its haemodynamic, sedative, anxiolytic, analgesic, neuroprotective and anaesthetic sparing effects. Dexmedetomidine is a  agent with a wide safety margin  and seems to have promising future applications.
