Overview
Description
Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is characterized by hepatic fat accumulation without significant alcohol intake. It ranges from simple steatosis to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which can progress to fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Risk factors include obesity, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, and metabolic syndrome. Often asymptomatic, it may present with elevated liver enzymes. Diagnosis is via imaging (ultrasound, FibroScan) and exclusion of other causes. Management focuses on lifestyle modification—weight loss, diet, exercise—and controlling metabolic risk factors. No specific drug is approved.
